Lesbian Adoption

Marriage is said to be the union of two people in the bond of love. But it’s more like a certificate of acceptance as a couple to the society and a license to form a family. The society accepts the bonding of a man and a woman in the holy court of marriage. Nowadays in many countries lesbian marriages have also become acceptable to the law. But now the question arises as how will two women in love with each other reproduce a child to complete their family? Biologically it’s not possible, so, the only remaining option is that of adoption of a child. But how to go about it in a society where parents of a child are supposed to be of the opposite sex?
Adoption by lesbians is being legalized in some European countries, parts of Australia, Canada and United States of America. Some countries have adopted the universal adoption policy i.e. anyone deemed to be capable of providing a healthy stable family home can adopt children. Some organizations keep a regular check on such couples after adoption as to how well are they keeping the child. Lesbian couples can be foster parents of an adopted child or even a step child. Some places allow second parent adoption by same sex couples. So overall if lesbians are in the right place it won’t be difficult for them to get married and have a family when the law permits them and respects their feelings.
But this issue is very controversial at times if looked from its emotional aspect. Such things have a potential for gender confusion, biased sexual orientation and even identity issues. It may have an effect on the child as he/she might get confused by the usual family rule of having a mom and a dad and not two moms! The child may face taunts from many people who are not so acceptable to this broad minded idea of lesbian adoption. Both the female parents may also feel uncomfortable seeing the condition of the child. This might even hamper the over-all development of the child as the man provides something while the female provides something else for the personality development of the child. The child will receive cent percent from the female side but none from male side.
But at times we should just let some change happen and be a bit more acceptable. Perhaps in future this concept becomes more comfortable for people to talk about and accept.
